Field Overview

The Powder River Basin (PRB) is a geologic structural basin in southeast Montana and northeast Wyoming, about 120 miles east to west and 200 miles north to south. Historically, this area is known for supplying an estimated 40% of the nation’s coal. As an oil and gas basin, it is one of the most intriguing and tantalizing for geologists given its oil rich, multiple stacked horizons.

This potential has attracted a number of large operators and substantial CapX made even more attractive due to the field’s similarity to the Permian but with substantially lower lease rates. As development increases and takeaway capacity continues to increase, we believe this basin is poised to break out as a pre-eminent oil and gas play in the lower 48 in the near future. It’s one of our preferred areas of focus.
